Every Upcoming 2023 MCU Release, Ranked By IMDb Popularity

Whether The Marvels, Quantumania, or Agatha: Coven of Chaos, some MCU projects in 2023 are clearcut winners and losers based on their IMDb popularity.

Though The Marvels doesn’t release until July next year and isn’t even being promoted by Marvel Studios yet, fans are already talking about the Captain Marvel sequel. There are still tons of other MCU movies and series that fans have to look forward to in 2023, a couple of which they probably didn’t even know were on the horizon.

Based on IMDb’s “Most Popular” list, which is determined by IMDb users, 2023’s MCU releases have some interesting placements. One of the major theatrically released movies is surprisingly low, and a Disney+ series that is scheduled for the back end of the year is shockingly high. But between some releases, a couple of them aren’t even in the conversation.

#1 Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania (#5)

Given that Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is the very next MCU theatrical release after Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, it's hardly surprising that the movie is the fifth most popular on IMDb. That's especially the case considering that the trailer has just recently been released. Nevertheless, there are so many other reasons why Quantumania is so popular.

#2 Loki Season 2 (#240)

Loki is a sci-fi space odyssey that not even Thor: Ragnarok can compete with. Between the music, the almost intentionally fake-looking set design, and the hard-to-grasp but fascinating concepts, Marvel Studios built an incredible world for fans to delve into, and it's the show that deserves a second season more than any other.

It's hardly surprising that one of Disney+'s most interesting shows that ended on the biggest MCU cliffhanger outside of The Snap is one of the most popular. Fans are impatiently waiting to find out what happens to Loki in an alternate universe where Kang rules the Time Variance Authority. But above all else, viewers want to see Mobius finally ride a jet ski.

#3 Guardians Of The Galaxy Volume 3 (#247)

Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 couldn't be more popular right now, and considering it's a while away and Marvel Studios hasn't begun to market it yet, it sits comfortably high on IMDb's most popular list. While there's no trailer for the movie yet, the film's popularity certainly got a bump from the hilarious trailer for The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special.

And it seems like it's constantly being promoted by the movie's writer and director, as James Gunn is massively active on Twitter. Not only that, but with it being the third Guardians movie, the characters have been long established, and with the original Phase One superheroes mostly finished in the universe, the intergalactic team of outcasts is now some of the MCU's elder statesmen.

#4 Agatha: Coven Of Chaos (#644)

It's impressive that Agatha: Coven of Chaos is way more popular than Secret Invasion, which has a trailer out and is released earlier, and even more popular than What If..., which has already been established with the first season. Audiences know next to nothing about the witch-based MCU series, other than that it'll clearly have a fun Hocus Pocus-like aesthetic and that Aubrey Plaza has just been cast in an undisclosed role.

But the mystery surrounding the film could be exactly why it's so popular on IMDb. Fans could be constantly refreshing the page just to find out if there have been other new updates, especially whether Elizabeth Olsen could reprise her role as Scarlet Witch. Agatha also quickly became a fan-favorite character in WandaVision, so much so that the song "Agatha All Along" even entered the Billboard Digitial Song Sales chart (via Billboard).

#5 What If… Season 2 (#658)

Out of all of the upcoming 2023 MCU releases, What If... is by far the most inconsequential, as the animated anthology series had no effect on the current universe, and the first season didn't fully take advantage of the concept. The first season was pretty spotty, with some episodes being great, some being fine, and the rest being terrible, but that hasn't stopped fans from still being excited for season 2.

There aren't many details on the upcoming season other than that the first episode is called "What If... Captain Carter Fought the Hydra Stomper?" (via Slash Film), and that Cate Blanchett will reprise her role as Hela (via Comicbook.com), whose only appearance was in Thor: Ragnarok. It's great that she's back even if it is for a one-off animated series, as Hela deserves her own MCU movie.

#6 Secret Invasion (#737)

With the teaser trailer out, it looks like Secret Invasion could be the most exciting MCU Disney+ series ever, as Samuel L. Jackosn is back as Nick Fury, seemingly in the lead role, and he looks prepared for a fight. And though there might not be many, as it still has a standard budget across multiple episodes, the series will undoubtedly have tons of cameos.

As the show is all about the Skrulls shapeshifting into humans and superheroes, just as Talos did with Fury in Spider-Man: Far From Home, there could be cameos from other superheroes or even famous actors playing themselves. Fans want to see Keanu Reeves play a Skrull version of himself, and it could be incredible if the aliens just stormed Hollywood.

#7 The Marvels (#893)

The Marvels is essentially the sequel to Captain Marvel, and though some fans of the 2019 movie might be disappointed that they aren't getting a proper solo sequel, The Marvels is one of the most exciting sounding team-up movies. The film will see Carol Danvers team up with Ms. Marvel, the MCU's first confirmed mutant, and Monica Rambeau, who can absorb energy.

With these characters and their unique powers, the upcoming release could feature some of the MCU's most inventive action scenes yet. Not only that, but it could also be a major pay-off following Secret Invasion, as it'll undoubtedly heavily feature Skrulls again, and it'll be an important stepping stone toward Secret Wars. In that respect, the film is even more consequential than Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 in the grand scheme of things.

#8 Ironheart (#909)

It isn't surprising that Ironheart is one of the least popular, but there are still tons of reasons to get excited. Ironheart will follow Riri Williams, a genius inventor who somehow created tech similar to Tony Stark's, and she made her feature debut in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Ironheart will be most interesting simply to see how Riri Williams will be set up to become the Iron Man of the Young Avengers. And following Ironheart, the path toward a possible Young Avengers movie will be a lot more obvious, and the show will hopefully clear things up. It'll be one of the shorter MCU series, as it consists of just six episodes, but it'll undoubtedly be full of action sequences involving the Iron Man suit, something that fans haven't properly seen in years.

#9 Echo (#1465)

Echo will follow the titular character, a deaf superhero who can perfectly copy anybody's movements and a former commander of the Tracksuit Mafia. It's surprising that Echo isn't higher in popularity, as the character has already been introduced in Hawkeye. Not only that, but Daredevil and Kingpin will return and have pivotal roles, too.

The series all has so much potential to introduce new characters into the MCU, such as The Rose, who is Wilson Fisk's son, and the assassin Lady Bullseye. However, its lack of popularity might be because Hawkeye didn't get the warmest reception of the Disney+ MCU shows, or because Marvel Studios is focusing on marketing its earlier projects right now audiences simply aren't aware of it.
