Actor Taron Egerton will reteam with his Black Bird creator Dennis Lehane on another Apple TV+ series, this time the arson-themed Firebug.

Taron Egerton and Black Bird creator Dennis Lehane are officially reuniting for Apple TV+’s upcoming true crime series Firebug. Based on the autobiographical novel In with the Devil: a Fallen Hero, a Serial Killer, and a Dangerous Bargain for Redemption, the Apple TV+ 6-episode miniseries Black Bird debuted in July and was met with immediate critical acclaim. Egerton led the miniseries that was written by Lehane, which followed Jimmy Keene Jr. (Egerton) as he accepts a dangerous deal while spending time behind bars. He must befriend a suspected serial killer and learn his murderous secrets in exchange for his freedom.

It has now been revealed that Egerton and Lehane will be reuniting for the upcoming true crime series Firebug, via Deadline. Egerton will lead the upcoming project, which is being is developed, written, and produced by Lehane. Apple TV+ has just boarded the project, and the streamer gave the upcoming true crime show a series order.

What To Expect From Firebug

Firebug will follow an arson investigator (Egerton) along with a troubled detective as they attempt to pursue two serial arsonists. Although it is a fictionalized series, Firebug is inspired by the notorious California arsonist John Leonard Orr, as well as a handful of true events that were recounted in Truth Media’s podcast Firebug. The Truth Media podcast was hosted by Kary Antholis, who will be onboard the upcoming Apple TV+ series as an executive producer for Crime Story Media, LLC.

Including Antholis, Black Bird executive producers Lehane, Egerton, Richard Plepler, Dan Friedkin, and Bradley Thomas will also be reuniting on the upcoming Apple TV+ true crime series. Considering the great success that Black Bird was, it will be interesting to see if Lehane’s follow-up project will be able to reach its predecessor’s initial reaction from both critics and its worldwide audience. From Egerton’s leading performance to Lehane’s written word, it seems that Firebug is already in fantastic hands for those who love true crime, fictional tales, and everything in between.

Outside the highly praised Black Bird umbrella that Firebug will undoubtedly always have cast over it, the fact that Emmy Award-winning streamer Apple TV+ is also behind the upcoming project suggests Firebug will be a uniquely and remarkably done fictionalized true crime series unlike any other. Although it is too early to know, Lehane’s beautifully executed Black Bird, paired with Egerton’s impeccable on-screen performance, has been speculated to win one, if not multiple, Emmy Awards during the next award season. The reunion of Lehane and Egerton with the forthcoming fictionalized series Firebug is already setting itself up to be one that true crime buffs and television enthusiasts aren’t going to want to miss. There is currently no known release date for the upcoming series Firebug.
