Lena Dunham returns to search through episodes of her life for something universal that reflects the changes of her generation. Focused on her thirties, she now debuts on Netflix with the episodes of ‘No Measure’.
Girls (2012-2017)
When HBO premiered ‘Girls’ (2012-2017), we discovered a very particular style of making fiction, that of Lena Dunham (‘American Horror Story: Cult’), a creator and actress who, after two of her own projects, made the leap to a more professional level of production that gave us one of the freshest and most rebellious youth series, a generational portrait and an audiovisual phenomenon that few fictions had achieved in recent years.
‘Girls’ reflected the disorientation of 4 twenty-something friends with very diverse personalities, where getting to know themselves, accepting each other and betting on what truly made them happy while trying to squeeze the New York life were the keys of their decade in an evident coming-of-age narrative.

It was a sort of new and groundbreaking ‘Sex and the City’ for those born in the 90s who were precisely going through their college years at that time, and it introduced us to Jemima Jo Kirke (‘Sex Education’) and Adam Driver (‘The Report’, ‘Star Wars’ saga), among others. Now, having moved past that stage, Lena Dunham aims to analyze her thirties, which she is currently immersed in, and by revisiting episodes from her own personal life, she presents ‘No Bounds’, the perfect summer comedy that will be available among Netflix series.
The creator of ‘Girls’ Lena Dunham premieres a series on Netflix inspired by her true story.
She tried to transcend again with the premiere of ‘Genera+ion’ on HBO and some movies, but she did not achieve that groundbreaking spirit and generational transcendence that ‘Girls’ had. However, perhaps this time Lena Dunham has hit the mark in appealing to the authentic thirty-somethings today with ‘Sin medida’, the series that premieres on Thursday, July 10 on Netflix.
In it, Jessica (Megan Stalter, ‘Hacks’) is a thirty-something New Yorker who is a workaholic but is going through a tough time: she recently ended a romantic relationship that she believed would last forever, and in mourning that failure, she is isolating herself from her surroundings. Willing to break out of that loop, she decides to put some distance between herself and the Big Apple and accepts a job in London where she can retreat into a serene life. However, her plan takes a turn as soon as she lands, because when she meets Felix (Will Sharpe, ‘The White Lotus 2’), she discovers an evident and almost irresistible connection, even though it seems to come with a huge sign with lights and red flags announcing ‘problems’.
Along the way, Jessica will have the opportunity to bump into Michael Zegen (‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’), Richard E. Grant (‘Persuasion’), Adèle Exarchopoulos (‘Blue Is the Warmest Color’), Naomi Watts (‘The Watcher’), Rita Wilson, Andrew Rannells, Rhea Perlman, and Emily Ratajkowski, among others.
Curiously, something similar happened to Lena Dunham herself, who has poured some autobiographical experiences into ‘Not That Kind of Girl’ to bring truth to this journey that, in a way, was hers. After all, she left the U.S. after her breakup with Jack Antonoff and the success of ‘Girls’ to bet on her relationship with Luis Felber, whom she married in London in 2021.
For her part, the protagonist of ‘Out of Measure’ will have to discover that, despite sharing a language, there is a deep barrier between Americans and Brits. Will they manage to bridge the cultural, social, and emotional distances that separate them, or will they discover firsthand what it means to be ‘lost in translation’?
