Commitment to Compete at the Highest Level
Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has turned down a highly lucrative offer from Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal, citing his desire to continue competing at the pinnacle of professional football. Despite the deal potentially doubling his current wages at Old Trafford, the 30-year-old midfielder chose to remain at the club.
Family Talks and Amorim’s Influence
Fernandes revealed that after discussing the offer with his family, he decided against the move. Speaking ahead of Portugal’s Nations League semi-final clash with Germany, he said that United manager Ruben Amorim strongly encouraged him to stay.
"United weren’t looking to sell me. The option was mine," Fernandes explained. "Coach Amorim was very clear—he urged me to remain part of the project."
Temptation from Saudi Arabia
Fernandes acknowledged the appeal of Al-Hilal's proposal, calling it an “exciting” opportunity. With several Portuguese stars like Cristiano Ronaldo, Joao Cancelo, and Ruben Neves already in Saudi Arabia, the move might have seemed natural. However, he emphasized that his motivation is still tied to competing at the top level.
"I want to keep playing in the biggest competitions," he said. "It’s about doing what I love at the highest standard—and being happy while doing it."
Manchester United’s Reaction
The club is reportedly pleased with Fernandes' decision. There were no formal negotiations between Manchester United and Al-Hilal, though it’s believed the Saudi club was willing to offer between £80m and £100m to sign him ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup.
Fernandes' Ongoing Legacy at United
Since joining from Sporting Lisbon in January 2020 for £47 million, Fernandes has made 290 appearances and scored 98 goals for United, becoming one of the team’s most influential figures.
Gary Neville Praises Fernandes' Loyalty
Former club captain Gary Neville commended Fernandes’ decision, saying it reflects strong character. Speaking to Sky Sports, Neville noted:
"It would’ve been easy for him to leave. That he’s chosen to stay, at a time when the club is struggling, will mean a lot to fans. It shows he’s committed, not just professionally but emotionally, to Manchester United."
Neville added, “Players like that—willing to fight for the badge—are exactly what the club needs right now.”
