Henry Cavill took to Instagram to respond to this news.

For those fans of the DC Extended Universe waiting on news about Superman and how he will figure into the new DCU, they now have some rock-solid and official news. James Gunn announced officially on his Twitter that there is a DC slate ready to go, and among those movies on the slate is one involving the character of Superman. But there’s a catch.

Gunn said that the story will focus on an earlier part of Superman’s life. This means, sadly, according to Gunn’s confirmation, that the character will not be played by Henry Cavill. Gunn also said that he and Peter Safran “just had a great meeting with Henry, and we’re big fans, and we talked about a number of exciting possibilities to work together in the future.”

With all the shakeups and uncertainty going on in the DCU, among them being the uncertainty of the characters of Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and the whole of the Justice League, fans can surely appreciate the certainty of the news that the Man of Steel, who is faster than a speeding bullet, can leap tall buildings in a single bound, and is the symbol of hope, will be a part of the future of the DC Universe. Gunn, in the Twitter thread, commented to someone that he is writing the new Superman movie, but gave no further details as to plot, story, and other characters that will be alongside Kal-El, otherwise known to the humans as Clark Kent. He also confirmed that they do not have a director attached to the film at this time.

Since the movie will focus on an earlier part of Superman’s life, there are several avenues it can take. Like in the movie The Batman, which focused on Bruce Wayne’s earlier days as the Caped Crusader, the film could possibly focus on Kal El’s earlier days as the symbol of justice and hope. It could also take a Superman for All Seasons approach, where it focuses on him and the surrounding cast of characters as he lives his life as Clark Kent and Superman. No matter what direction the movie takes, it will be interesting to see this new big-screen take on the iconic DC character.

Keep your eyes on Collider for more details as they develop. You can take a look at Gunn’s Twitter thread starting below:
