New Night Train Promises Affordable Private Sleepers Across Europe
Night trains are experiencing a resurgence in Europe, offering a more sustainable alternative to flying. However, many travelers remain hesitant due to the discomfort of sharing sleeping compartments with strangers. A new player in the rail industry, Nox, aims to solve this problem by launching private sleeper cabins at prices comparable to air travel.
Private Cabins for Solo and Couple Travelers
The new night train service from Berlin-based startup Nox is set to revolutionize overnight rail journeys by offering completely private accommodations. Starting in 2027, Nox plans to launch sleeper trains across Europe, providing rooms designed for one or two passengers — with no need to share with strangers.
“We believe night trains should be a central part of European travel,” says Thibault Constant, co-founder of Nox. “Currently, people are often forced to sleep in cramped conditions, and sharing a cabin isn’t for everyone. Our goal is to change that and make rail travel comfortable, private, and affordable.”
Innovative Cabin Designs and Comfortable Features
Drawing from over 400 personal night train experiences, Constant — also known as "Simply Railway" on social media — helped design the new train interiors. Nox’s trains will offer three types of private rooms:
Single Loft: A compact cabin for one, featuring an upper-level bed, a seat, and a table.
Double Loft: A room for two with a double upper bed, two seats, and a table.
Double Vista: Featuring two easy-entry beds (the lower converts into seating), perfect for comfort and accessibility.
All rooms will have extra-long beds (2 meters), dedicated luggage storage, standing space, and in some cases, panoramic windows for scenic nighttime views.
Efficient Design for Affordable Fares
The modular and space-efficient design allows more passengers per train, helping reduce operational costs. Co-founder Janek Smalla explains, “By focusing on standardization and operational excellence, we can offer competitive pricing across more than 35 routes.”
This design model helps Nox keep prices low while maintaining comfort — a crucial advantage as they aim to compete directly with budget airlines.
Expanding Routes and Competitive Prices
By 2035, Nox plans to connect 100 major cities across Europe, including Paris, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Budapest, Rome, Warsaw, and Copenhagen. Tickets for the new night train will start at €79 for single rooms and €149 for double cabins, matching or undercutting typical airfare on comparable routes.
Additional on-board features include:
A food and beverage service
Bicycle storage
Wheelchair-accessible coaches
Travelers can also join the Early Bird Club for free to receive updates, early booking access, and special discounts.
A New Era for Night Trains in Europe
The launch of this new night train service reflects a broader shift in how Europeans view rail travel — not just as a nostalgic option, but as a modern, private, and cost-effective alternative to flying. With privacy, comfort, and competitive pricing at its core, Nox could be the future of overnight travel on the continent.
