PM Shehbaz Reaffirms Vision for Pakistan as a Global Tech Hub
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed Pakistan’s strategic goal of becoming a major global technology destination, citing the recent commitment of $700 million in foreign investment for the IT sector. Speaking at Pakistan’s inaugural Digital Foreign Direct Investment (DFDI) Conference in Islamabad, the premier invited international investors to take advantage of the country’s skilled workforce and rapidly developing digital infrastructure.
“Pakistan is not just preparing for the future — we are actively shaping it,” said PM Shehbaz during his keynote address. The conference drew participation from representatives of around 45 nations, including more than 75 international investors and CEOs from over 50 global enterprises.
Though the digital sector has long been recognized as a promising avenue for foreign investment, according to recent news Pakistan has only recently begun gaining traction in attracting substantial tech-based FDI. The prime minister emphasized the country’s renewed focus on digital innovation, calling for sustained international collaboration as Pakistan aims to establish itself as a leader in the global digital economy.
He highlighted several ongoing initiatives, such as the development of IT parks at both federal and provincial levels, the launch of technology incubation centers, and support for a national research and development ecosystem. Noting that 60% of Pakistan’s population is between the ages of 15 and 30, he announced a partnership with Huawei to provide digital skills training to 200,000 youth across the country.
“Our young people are the driving force of our digital future,” PM Shehbaz declared. He also mentioned that Pakistan recorded an all-time high of $4.1 billion in foreign remittances in March, a sign of growing confidence in the country’s digital capabilities.
“We are not merely building a digital economy — we are creating a digital Pakistan,” he added. “From leveraging artificial intelligence in agriculture to expanding exports through smart technologies, this is the ideal moment for global partners to come on board.”
Youth Power and Digital Progress: National Leaders Highlight Achievements
Minister of State for IT and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja also addressed the gathering, underscoring Pakistan’s rapid growth in IT exports. She noted that the country’s youth — over 100 million strong — is its most significant digital asset. Under the prime minister’s direct leadership, over 300,000 young people have received IT training this year alone.
She further stressed the importance of strengthening Pakistan’s digital infrastructure and regulatory environment to support sustainable digital transformation.
Abu Bakar, CEO of the Pakistan Software Export Board, announced that the country’s IT exports are projected to surpass $4 billion this year. He attributed this milestone to successful collaboration between the public and private sectors, as well as the abundance of national talent.
Deemah AlYahya, Secretary-General of the Digital Cooperation Organisation, praised Pakistan’s bold vision and commitment to innovation. “This is a defining moment where vision, talent, and opportunity align,” she stated. “Digital transformation is no longer a trend — it’s a revolution. With 142 million broadband users, 65% smartphone penetration, and export growth on the rise, Pakistan is ready for digital acceleration.”
