Why India Targeted Pakistan's Air Defence Today: 'Any Attack on Military Sites.

Yesterday, during Operation Sindoor, India targeted 24 terrorist bases in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK), ensuring that no military installations were hit. In response, Pakistan escalated the situation by attempting to strike several military sites across northern and western India. India, in turn, retaliated by targeting air defence radars in multiple locations within Pakistan, successfully neutralizing one in Lahore.

An official statement from the Indian government issued late last night described the Operation Sindoor airstrikes as “focused, measured, and non-escalatory,” emphasizing that the strikes were aimed at the terrorist infrastructure of groups like Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed, and not at military establishments. It also reiterated that any attack on Indian military targets would be met with a proportional response.

However, late in the evening, Pakistan attempted to strike several military sites in northern and western India, including locations such as Awantipura, Srinagar, Jammu, Pathankot, Amritsar, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Adampur, Bhatinda, Chandigarh, Nal, Phalodi, Uttarlai, and Bhuj, using drones and missiles. These attacks were successfully intercepted and neutralized by India’s Integrated Counter UAS Grid and Air Defence systems. Debris from these failed attacks is now being recovered from multiple sites, which serves as evidence of Pakistan’s aggression.

As predicted, India struck back today, targeting Pakistani air defence systems. “This morning, Indian Armed Forces hit air defence radars and other systems at several locations across Pakistan. The response was in the same domain and matched the intensity of Pakistan’s actions. Reports confirm that an air defence system in Lahore has been neutralized,” the statement read.

The government also noted an increase in Pakistani artillery shelling along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly in Kupwara, Baramulla, Uri, Poonch, Mendhar, and Rajouri sectors. This cross-border fire has resulted in the tragic loss of 16 civilian lives, including three women and five children. In response, India was forced to take action to halt the mortar and artillery fire. The Indian Armed Forces reiterated their commitment to non-escalation, provided that Pakistan respects this principle.

Operation Sindoor was launched as retaliation for the brutal terror attack in Pahalgam, which resulted in the deaths of 25 tourists and a Kashmiri man. The Resistance Front, a proxy group of Lashkar-e-Taiba, claimed responsibility for the attack. Investigations revealed that there were communications between the terrorists and individuals in Pakistan.

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, during a briefing yesterday, highlighted that this attack is part of a broader pattern of Pakistan’s involvement in cross-border terrorism, a record that is well-documented and indisputable. He stressed the importance of bringing those responsible for the April 22 attack to justice. “Despite more than two weeks passing since the attack, Pakistan has failed to take any meaningful action against the terrorist infrastructure within its borders or in territories under its control. Instead, it has chosen to deny and deflect responsibility. Our intelligence has confirmed that more attacks were being planned, which left us with no choice but to act decisively to deter and pre-empt further violence,” he stated.

He further added, “This morning, India exercised its right to respond in a way that would pre-empt and deter future cross-border attacks. Our actions were measured, non-escalatory, proportional, and responsible. They were focused solely on dismantling terrorist infrastructure and neutralizing militants likely to be sent into India.”
